Description
Kilcullen GAA Club was formed in 1889, just five years after the formation of the GAA.
The original club colours up to 1908 were Green and Gold, but it was agreed to change to Black and White following the All Blacks Rugby Team playing in Dublin in that year. The clubs famous nickname, “The Rags”, comes from a friendly game against a smartly dressed Dublin team, Isles of the Sea, where the Dubliners insulted the Kilcullen team’s shabby kit on the day!!
Kilcullen had the distinction of providing the first Chairman and Secretary for the Kildare County Board in their first year in office.
Since then, we have grown and grown, we now have over 700 members made up of both playing members and supporters in our club, with over half of that number in our thriving juvenile section from the Academy, which is on every Saturday, all the way up to our Minor teams. The juvenile section has gone from strength to strength over the last few years winning multiple leagues and championships, both boys and girls.
We are now starting to see these players grow and lead the next generation to success in our Intermediate Men’s and Ladies teams who both hope to gain senior status in the coming years and add to the history of the club by adding to the 5 Intermediate and 6 Junior Championships (Men’s) and 1 Junior ‘A’ and 1 Junior ‘B’ Championship (Ladies).
Our latest honours include winning the Men’s Junior Championship in 2016 which seen us go on to compete in the Leinster Junior Championship where we had the honour of representing the county, province and country by taking on then European Champions – Amsterdam GAC on a memorable trip made even more memorable when we came away with the victory. On our ladies side we have gone from Junior ‘B’ to the cusp of senior football in just 4 years which saw us scoop the Junior ‘A’ and ‘B’ titles and just narrowly miss out in the Intermediate final last season.
Each bag of Kilcullen GAA branded coffee from Coffee4Clubs will see a contribution go directly towards the sustainability and future development of our club.
